It’s important in life to stop once in a while and take inventory. We’ve talked a lot lately about God and His requirements and forgiveness. We are required to forgive those who have sinned against us. Why? Because God has in His mercy and grace chosen to forgive us. And, by the way, we certainly don’t deserve to be forgiven. God doesn’t forgive us because we deserve it; He does so purely because He is merciful.

Now the person or persons you need to forgive as you take inventory probably don’t deserve to be forgiven either, any more than you do. But still God says, “Forgive, and you will be forgiven.” Forgiveness is not about feelings; it’s an act of the will.  It’s a choice. We can chose to forgive, and when we do, we remove any hindrance to our own forgiveness as well.

  • If we remind people of the hurts they cause us does that mean we didn’t forgive them? If they hurt us in the same way all the time?

    • Jesus teaches us in Matthew 18 how to handle wrongs done to us. We are to go to the person and tell them what they’ve done, and hopefully they will change their behavior. If that doesn’t work, then we are to bring two or three witnesses along with us the next time. God’s desire is that we live in peace and learn how to get along with each other. You can forgive a person, but if they do it again, they need to be told and forgiven again.
